Background of the Study:
Online education has revolutionized traditional learning models, offering flexible and accessible learning opportunities. In Ikere-Ekiti Local Government, Ekiti State, the shift to digital learning platforms has become a critical factor in skill development among students and working professionals. This mode of education not only provides access to diverse learning resources but also encourages self-paced study, which is essential in today's fast-changing job market (Ajayi, 2023). Online education facilitates the acquisition of both technical and soft skills by integrating interactive tools and multimedia resources, thereby catering to various learning styles (Bamidele, 2024). However, challenges such as limited internet connectivity, inadequate digital infrastructure, and a lack of face-to-face interaction may hinder the overall effectiveness of online education. Recent studies have suggested that while digital learning has the potential to enhance skill development significantly, its success largely depends on the adaptability of the learners and the robustness of the support systems available (Ogunleye, 2025). As educational institutions and policymakers continue to promote e-learning initiatives, it becomes imperative to examine the impact of online education on skill development in the local context of Ikere-Ekiti, ensuring that the advantages outweigh the limitations.
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the promise of online education in enhancing skill development, Ikere-Ekiti Local Government faces challenges related to technological infrastructure and learner readiness. The digital divide and limited access to high-quality internet services restrict effective learning. This gap between the potential of online education and its actual implementation raises concerns regarding equitable skill acquisition and long-term employability (Ajayi, 2023).
